Fishing Lures Ad...Comp #1

Here is my first comp for the fishing lures ad. This is very rough but gets my initial idea across. The silhouette is eventually going to be an illustration. I was thinking watercolor and pen and ink, but for now it's just there for placement. Still not sure what I think of my color scheme with the light blue background and green headline, but we'll see.

Round 2...Food Articles

Second time around with these two magazine layouts. I feel both are an improvement. The "Secret of Being Full" still seems a little boring to me. I think i'm going to make the graphic an illustration, either in illustrator or watercolor. Also, the headline seems a little disjointed to me and needs to be resolved. Downloaded another free image from istock today, it's an old lady looking at xrays or something...doubt i'll ever use it, but you never know...and hey, it's free! That's about all the news from my viscom life, peace out!

2 New Layouts...

2 more initial layouts. Both were food themed kinda...So one the second one I decided not to do a graphic or photo of food and played off the headline word "secret." Anyways I know these still need a lot more work so more to come!

Final Stress Article Layout

STRESSED OUT! Story of my life...Probably didn't spend as much time as I should've with this first layout; I feel like I could have done more with it. I used red because it's such a bold and "stress-esque" color. The lovely photo at the bottom was my own photography of my mother. In the end I was moderately happy with this piece, but it could use a little more work. I don't think I mind magazine spreads as much as some other people. I think they can be interesting as long as you have good, inspiring ideas.

Old D-Zance Poster...aka HOT MESS

Old TSODA dance poster that I'm just now blogging about. The only thing I like about this poster is my graphic of my dancer. This particular piece was a time crunch for me and happened to come about at a time I just wasn't feeling so inspired. I know this isn't an excuse...but it sucks and I know it. (Not quite sure what the big triangle of color is even for). I'm happy we dropped this nasty little booger

Poop drum

My final NAHM poster. My drum looks like poop. It looked better on the screen. Anyways I think the layout and overall design is better, but i think I could've done more with my graphic...but I'm still not sure what the best solution would have been. GO NATIONAL AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH!

Third Time's a Charm

Ok, third revision. I feel I've improved from the last one with the graphic behind my drum, the filter on the actual drum also helps because it helps it to pop out. In addition, the drop shadow behind "Beat" helps that to stand out as well. For Friday I might work on the background graphic to refine it a bit and a little more editing with the drum photo. What's going to happen Friday? The anticipation is building! I can't stand it!

Blah Blah Blah Viscom Posters are My Life

Oh hey, me again...+ 2 more posters. One second comp of the indian poster along with a rough comp of a TSODA dance poster. For my indian poster I came up with a new headline "Discover the Beat of Heritage" to go alone with my drum graphic. I also rearranged my whole layout and added design graphic elements behind the drum to mimic indian patterns. Overall I feel this poster has improved. The dance poster, however, I am not completely happy with. I like my graphic on this piece but I don't really have a concept yet and the gradient box is essentially pointless...this piece needs work. Until next time!

note: The image of the Native American Poster is scanned and cut it off a little bit at the bottom...

Indian Poster: First Comp

For this assignment we once again had to redesign a poster, but this time 13x19 and with a nasty spot color. The subject of the poster is Indian Heritage so I decided to go with an Indian drum concept (or Tom Tom). To go along with this concept I used the the headline "Go Out With a Bang" and aligned "Bang" with the tilted drum photo and a star burst behind to mimic the comic book-like style. This poster obviously still needs some work, especially with my rough cropping of my drum, but I feel like I at least have an inkling of a concept looming. This is just our first comp so it is very rough...

More Posters...Assigment 3

2 more posters today. As you can see the subjects were rock climbing club and a latin dance party. I thought these subjects were a little more fun so I tried to make my posters fun as well. With my "Rock" climbing poster I went the humor route. Obviously this may not be the best idea if it were being professionally printed because of copyright issues...but actually The Rock came by my house yesterday and I just decided to seize an opportunity. There are other flaws in this poster as well such as some leading and space issues, but I think with some work and permission from The Rock I could make it semi-presentable. My concept for the Latin dance party was "Spice up you night" with a dancing pepper I drew. The pepper looks like he's having a great time so I'm sure anyone seeing this would want to go to this crazy latin dance party. Of the two posters I prefer my dance party one, but I could still work with it a little more on layout and copy I think. The fact that these 2 posters were 11x17 didn't change my process too much; just gave a little more space to work with. ASLD;FVISCOMISMYLIFELADJFLA

More Posters...Awesome.

Our second assignment was once again to redesign 2 sad-looking posters. The subjects were a ceramics class and a German festival. My idea for the ceramics poster was to create a large visual (basically a vector graphic of a pot) to draw attention with interesting copy following the contour of this graphic. For the German poster I went with the stereotypical beer graphic with some diagonal copy and a grid structure. I feel like these posters were an improvement from my last two but still not quite there. These assignments are making me realize how much awful design plagues Truman's campus...disgusting.
